The Response of Gas Hydrates to Tectonic Uplift

چکیده

Abstract Pressure reduction following uplift may lead to dissociation of gas hydrates. The dynamics hydrate in such settings, however, are poorly understood. We used TOUGH+HYDRATE investigate the response hydrates an 0.009 myr $$^{-1}$$ - 1 over last 8 kyrs, approximate end postglacial sea-level rise. Geological parameters for simulations based on deposits from Nankai Trough subduction zone. Our results suggest stabilisation endothermic cooling, elevated pore pressure, and water freshening significantly slows that remains place at its pre-uplift level. A shallower layer forms upward-migrating when assuming moderate high permeability (10 $$^{-15}$$ 15 10 $$^{-13}$$ 13 m $$^{2}$$ 2 ), while trapped low $$^{-17}$$ 17 ). In latter case, we predict pressure with potential implications seafloor stability. findings uplift, exist outside predicted regional stability field thousands years.

Postglacial response of Arctic Ocean gas hydrates to climatic amelioration.

Seafloor methane release due to the thermal dissociation of gas hydrates is pervasive across the continental margins of the Arctic Ocean. Furthermore, there is increasing awareness that shallow hydrate-related methane seeps have appeared due to enhanced warming of Arctic Ocean bottom water during the last century. Although it has been argued that a gas hydrate gun could trigger abrupt climate c...

Tectonic uplift and Eastern Africa aridification.

The history of Eastern African hominids has been linked to a progressive increase of open grassland during the past 8 million years. This trend was explained by global climatic processes, which do not account for the massive uplift of eastern African topography that occurred during this period. Atmosphere and biosphere simulations quantify the role played by these tectonic events. The reduced t...
